On November 25th, the project result “Selection and application of rubber tree varieties with high resistance and high yield” led by the Rubber Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences passed the evaluation of the results of the expert group in Haikou.
The evaluation of the results was organized by the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and invited experts from the Chinese Academy of Engineering Yu Shuxun, Chen Xuegeng, Cao Fuliang, and Zhao Chunjiang, and academicians from the Academy of Sciences of the Developing Countries Huang Jikun. The expert group listened to the results report and expert Q & A session. The expert group believes that the results aim at the problems of mainly imported varieties, low yields, and poor adaptability to wind and cold damage of rubber trees in China, to establish a characteristic rubber tree germplasm resource identification and evaluation system, stress-resistant high-yield breeding, and a high-yield cultivation technology system, break through the genetic mechanism of adversity, and create key technologies such as evaluation of adversity resistant germplasm resources, early prediction of yield, optimization of breeding procedures, etc. The results have reached the international advanced level as a whole, of which stress-resistant breeding technology and new breed selection are leading internationally.
The project has cultivated 17 main varieties of wind-resistant and cold-resistant high-yield series, which significantly improved the ability to resist wind, cold and rubber production. The results will accelerate the promotion and application of new varieties and technologies through innovative organizational cooperation models. The planting area of new varieties accounts for 38.5% of the country ’s total planted rubber area, with an increase of more than 30% per mu, and a cumulative increase of more than 1 million tons of dry rubber, which has made a significant contribution to ensuring the safety of natural rubber supply in China and increasing rubber farmers' income.
