China's Macao SAR law "Limiting the provision of plastic bags" came into force on November 18th. The law stipulates that in addition to the two exemptions, merchants must charge 1 pataca per plastic bag for retail activities, and are not allowed to provide free of charge. These two exemptions include unprepacked food or medicine, or goods sold in specific areas of the airport.
Before the law came into force, the Environmental Protection Bureau of the Macao SAR Government continued to carry out extensive publicity on law popularization, including publicity in different regions, holding introductions to government departments, industries and the public, holding lectures with the theme of plastic reduction in many schools, and publicity to tourists at various entry-exit ports and tourist hot spots with the Tourism Bureau and other departments.
The Macao SAR Government hopes that by implementing laws to create a socially-reduced atmosphere, the focus of the law is not on fees or penalties, but on the desire to reduce the abuse of plastic bags, and appeal to the public to reduce the use of plastic bags and bring their own shopping bags. It is recommended to only provide plastic bags of the appropriate number and size to practice plastic reduction.
